Print editions and releases

This first edition print was released in April 2023, it’s a quiet release… not many people visit here yet, it’s all a bit word of mouth so far! However this month (April 2023) a print has just gone on display in legendary Arnolfini Bar (in Bristol), as well as the Barley Mow Pub and Bristol Tap Room in Bedminster. Thanks to the brilliant Bristol Beer Factory for getting behind this. I hope to see these in more venues across Bristol soon.

So, if you want a unique signed print at a great price, make your order soon. I make the prints in batches, so please be patient if I have run out (email me if you want).

Please sign up to mailing list when you make an order, as sooner or later I might have a little launch event for this and I can email you the details.

In the future I plan to ask artists to contribute to the print, so we can replace a flyer or two with current work. I like the idea of the past meeting the present, so please get in touch if you’re think you can collaborate with this.

Please visit the shop to make a purchase, support the cause and celebrate Bristol’s cultural history.

Framing your print

I don’t usually frame the prints, however I recommend using the Nielsen Alpha matt black aluminium frames (real glass and brilliant quality), available from a number of outlets including a company called best4frames.co.uk There are less expensive wooden options available at wallspace.co.uk

The matt black aluminium Nielsen frames are a great match with this print.

The charity Talk Club

I never used to think much about my mental health, life happened and so did my thoughts, and somehow it usually worked. But, once it gets broken, you never take it for granted again. In 2018 I experienced a traumatic event that changed a lot of things for me. If you’re having a difficult time it’s really important to talk to people, work it out and make sense of your story….. turn it into a good one.

Talk Club offers a support network for men to keep mentally fit. It’s here to remind all men that they are not alone, that other men feel exactly the same way they do, and if we share our feelings we can become mentally strong. Talk Club is changing the way men look at their mental health and saving lives. All proceeds (after costs) from the sale of the print will go to the charity.

Art and Culture is Living

I see going out, talking, listening, meeting people and dancing as key parts of being alive, of being human. In this challenging and fast changing world, art and culture is real life and helps people keep mentally fit.

Sometimes it’s hard to make sense of lives, we all need to talk, and we all need a release, art and music can help us communicate our feelings, have fun and enjoy life. The Bristol Flyers for Charity Print proudly shows off Bristol’s fantastic cultural heritage, something I feel very proud to be a part of.

Nights out in Bristol

I used to go out quite a lot, and between 1985 and 1997 I accumulated a lot of flyers from events in Bristol. By 1997 my more “hardcore” nights out were behind me, so in a sort of creative “moving on” moment I decided to make a big montage of all the best flyers I had. The montage was big, so in 2003, while on a studio photo shoot with the Bristol based photographer Tony Gilbert, I managed to get a high quality photograph of the artwork. I thought the print looked great and it has remained a feature of wherever I’ve lived ever since.

Before smartphones no one took photos in clubs much, however here is some rare footage of me in the legendary Cosies in 1994ish with Alanda and Kate Burnet. I never wore a hat much, or had a beard (attempt) but was obviously trying out the look here! Cosie’s was usually packed and hot, what a slave to fashion!

The raising money idea

In 2018 I took part in the Totterdown Arts Trail. During the event some people saw the flyers print on our wall, and asked me if they could buy a copy, (even though it wasn’t for sale). The following year during the same event, I sold some prints and the raising money for a charity idea was born.

LOOK - Young people like this! Betty and Oli have put this on their Christmas list. I’m hoping the print will have a big appeal.

The missing flyer!

I couldn’t find a DJ Derek flyer, so I designed the one on the print. I based the design on something I had from that time and then sort approval to use it from an old friend of Derek’s. I also contacted the Star and Garter, just to make sure everyone was happy. All the other flyers are originals that I accumulated over time.

If anyone does have an old DJ Derek flyer out there (ideally from the 90’s), please pass it my way, I can scan and photoshop it in. The collection doesn’t feel complete without him in it, I enjoyed his sessions a lot, RIP Derek.

THANK YOU BRISTOL
